2pm Welcome & (re)Connect | 3pm Story Circles | 5:30pm Celebrate & Commune

In the spirit of Sankofa, join us in honoring the past, present and future of Dancing While Black. The Sankofa Story Circles opens a year of DWB 10th Anniversary programming — all rooted in deepening community building, resource sharing and, of course, celebration.

This afternoon of storytelling will be facilitated by Wendi Moore-O’Neal, who led our 5th Anniversary DWB story circle in 2017. The Anniversary year’s co-choreographers have invited a group of visionary dance artists who have engaged with Dancing While Black through its ten year journey, cultivating a Sankofic experience for all who are present. Story Circles is a democratic process of storytelling created by John O’Neal of the Free Southern Theater, the predecessor of Dancing While Black’s New Orleans partner, Junebug Productions.

Stick around and commune with us after the Story Circles; refreshments will be provided.

We look forward to gathering with you safely!

In order to take care, be safe and gather together we ask that all attendee’s be fully vaccinated (2 doses of Pfizer/Moderna or 1 dose of Johnson & Johnson) and boosted (if you are eligible for the booster). If you have yet to be boosted, we ask that you provide your proof of vaccination as well as a PCR Lab test taken within 72 hours of the event. BAAD! will check proof of vaccination and testing prior to entry. Additionally, please be aware this is a masked event. We ask that you keep your mask on for the full duration. We are grateful to have the means to celebrate and share space with each other safely.

About the Dancing While Black 10th Anniversary Season

Since 2012, Dancing While Black (DWB) has served as a launching pad and community hub, bringing Black dance voices to the fore and centering a space for them to reflect and create authentically. Throughout that time, we've supported 22 emerging Black artists as Fellows, incubated more than two dozen works and held countless convenings for folx to share, connect and simply be.

In 2022, DWB turns 10! In the spirit of Sankofa, we are celebrating the past, present and future of Dancing While Black. From May 2022 through May 2023, in-person and virtual public programming and intimate gatherings will be co-choreographed by our DWB Shared Leadership Team: DWB Founder Paloma McGregor, Kayla Hamilton (2017-2018 DWB Fellow), Marguerite Hemmings (2015-2016 DWB Fellow) and Joya Powell (2016-2017 DWB Fellow).
